Some equalizers excel at adding a powerful bottom end to hip-hop vocals, others are great for adding mid-range bite to rock tracks, and some are best for boosting the highs to create a brilliant top end on pop productions. Try a few options and see which EQ works best for your particular song.

I mean, I would’ve loved to have been there, and I would’ve relished that sacred moment of being in bodily proximity to Jigga. But what did Jay Z really do here that is so unlike the typical process of recording and producing an album, and then throwing a killer party to release it?

It’s always fun when a city has tons of music history to back up its current status. For Olympia, this means being home to both the riot-grrrl movement, known for their feminist approach to punk, and a few indie labels like K-Records — another Olympia music scene staple. While the main university is the Evergreen State College, it’s also home to South Puget Sound Community College, and it’s only about an hour drive to Seattle, making it a great stop for a burgeoning underground scene that’s ripe with DIY punk and creative approaches to every facet of music making. Visit Olympia to get inspired.

You isolate the harmonics on a guitar string by lightly touching it in certain places to deaden some of the vibrations. If you touch the vibrating string at its halfway point, you can hear it vibrating in halves. (On the guitar, the halfway point is right at the twelfth fret.) If you touch the string a third of the way along its length, you can hear it vibrating in thirds. (On the guitar, this point is right at the seventh fret.) Each whole-numbered fraction of the string produces a different harmonic. The shorter string sections produce higher and quieter harmonics.

In 20th and 21st century music there is a lot of imagination and experimentation, and strong interest in spirituality in general. But there isn’t much of this kind of intimate interweaving of specific sounds with concrete theological symbols. Composers like James MacMillan are exploring this sort of theology-based musical practice, as one writer describes his work, “giving the symbols and signs of Christianity their own flesh-and-blood physicality.” Others like Arvo Pärt use related methods in a broader sense. And surely there are other creative musicians working in this vein today.

The two scales differ from each other by only one note: B natural in the Dorian mode (a major sixth) as opposed to a B♭ (a minor sixth) on the same degree of the D Aeolian (Natural minor). These two modes are minor modes, because they share the presence of an F as a third degree of the scale (which, in music theory books is called “Modal” degree because it sets the mode of the scale and its general mood).

Here’s the thing about the bariolage section, then: Bach goes ahead and uses all the wrong notes. They’re all surprising, but the most surprising one is E♭, the most dissonant possible note in the key of D minor. That would be a bold choice even now. In Bach’s more conservative context, it was unheard of. But the bariolage doesn’t sound wrong at all. Bach carefully organizes all those chromatic notes so they all sound perfectly logical and inevitable. They sound richly strange, but certainly not wrong.

Absolutely. We didn’t have a blueprint on how to build any of our tech, so there was a lot of trial and error. We were an incredibly lean team for the first three years as we experimented, tested, and iterated our tech to a point that we could prove that our algorithms worked! There were plenty of sleepless nights and countless hours of staring at spreadsheets before we got our classification right. We aren’t done yet either, but most importantly, we have proven that the technology works and, now, we are taking the A.I. to the next level.

If the mastering step begins after mixing is done, but my song is not really “done” until it has been mastered, then how do I know when I’m done with mixing and ready to have my music mastered?

Now, if we apply the same reasoning to all the other modes, we would see that the differences between the modes and their respective Major or Minor counterparts is often only one note (with one exception, which we will see shortly).

Evan Zwisler is a NYC-based musician who is most notably known for his work with The Values as a songwriter and guitarist. He is an active member of the Brooklyn music scene, throwing fundraisers and organizing compilations for Planned Parenthood and the Anti-Violence Project. He started playing music in the underground punk scene of Shanghai with various local bands when he was in high school before going to California for college and finally moving to New York in 2012.

Castiel took a minute recently to tell us about how the idea for this company came about, how they’re strategically working to get partners in place for all kinds of labels and artists so they don’t need to do that work themselves, and a little bit about Serge Gainsbourg, too!

To find bands that might be a good fit, look up venues in your area that have capacities of around 200+, see who the headliners have been in the past, and pinpoint which ones usually open those shows. You can also scour local music blogs and publications. Once you’ve found a few bands you think you could work with, start making detailed lists. You want to make sure that your early efforts aren’t forgotten for future bookings.
